Have Your Say- Investing in Projects Across Bedford Borough

The Council wants to know what local residents think about its proposed ‘Capital Programme’. This sets out how the Council invests money on schemes and projects to improve Bedford Borough.

This includes investment in a number of different projects. In particular the Council is interested in views on two of the proposals: Bromham Road Cycle and Pedestrian Bridge, and Wixams Railway Station.

As part of its commitment to sustainable transport, Bedford Borough Council is proposing the installation of a new cycle and pedestrian bridge over the railway. This would separate cyclists and pedestrians from the busy Bromham Road when travelling over the railway line.

The original plan for the Wixams development included the provision of a railway station. Following considerable delays and an absence of any progress on building a station through the planning process the Bedford Borough Council is proposing to step in and commit £14 million of capital funds to fill the funding gap and deliver the station. These funds would be recouped from a share of the fares through an agreement with the rail industry.

Cllr Michael Headley, Portfolio Holder for Finance said “The Capital Programme sets out how the Council will invest in significant projects across the Borough. We have to ensure we are using our limited resources in the best way possible to meet the needs of local residents. Please take this opportunity to have your say.”

Residents can respond to the consultation online at www.bedford.gov.uk/consultations and there will be hard copies available at Borough Hall, the Customer Contact Centre, and local libraries. The deadline for responses is Friday 21st December, and all responses will be published.
