Increased Fines for Littering

From 1st April 2018 the fine issued to those caught littering in Bedford Borough has increased by £25, in the Council’s latest move to crackdown on this offence.

Recent legislation introduced by the Government allows Councils to increase the level of Fixed Penalty Notices for littering, graffiti and fly-posting. In Bedford Borough, offenders will be fined £100, with a discount to £75 if paid within 14 days.

New legislation also allows the Council to issue Fixed Penalty Notices to vehicle owners if litter is dropped from their vehicle, whether or not they were in the vehicle at the time. This would only be enforced if the vehicle owner has refused to provide details of the person witnessed littering.

Cllr Charles Royden, Portfolio Holder for Environment said “We take littering seriously in Bedford Borough with over 1000 people fined already this year, and these increased fines will hopefully make people think twice. We are working to enforce against enviro-crimes and help keep our Borough a clean and pleasant place to live.”
