Bedford Borough monitors and supports the performance of its maintained schools and settings using data provided by the institutions as well as by the Department for Education.

Parents can contribute to or read about views on individual school performance using the Ofsted interactive web site Parent View.

A performance report is produced annually for all maintained Lower/Primary and Middle schools, and can be obtained from your School Improvement Adviser.

For further information or support on the information below, please contact us on schoolimprovement@bedford.gov.uk. Alternatively, contact your school Improvement Adviser.

Numeracy

The School Improvement Team Improvement Advisers support schools to identify, monitor and quality assure good practice in Numeracy in lower, middle and primary schools, to share expertise through the commissioning of Specialist Leaders of Education (SLEs) through the teaching schools and to support schools causing concern.

Moderation

Moderation helps teachers to be confident that they are applying accurate and consistent standards when making their teacher assessment judgements. It also helps to ensure the teacher assessment results are fair for pupils and useful for schools and others who evaluate performance and progress.

Monitoring visits help build confidence in the security of the national curriculum tests. They provide headteachers with a formal opportunity to demonstrate how the national curriculum tests are administered in their schools.

Part of the moderation process includes an appeals process that can be used by the moderated school if they wish to question the outcomes of the moderation. A copy of our appeals procedure can be emailed to you.

There are three types of moderation activities conducted by the local authority:

  • Moderation of the EYFS profile
  • Key Stage 1 moderation
  • Key Stage 2 writing moderation

Literacy

The development of capacity within the appropriate Borough workforce in the teaching of reading remains a key to achieving our priority for raising attainment in KS2.

We deliver Sounds-Write™ training of phonics on a regular basis.
