The Council's Community Volunteering Team helps residents and community groups across the Borough to organise clean ups which improve the look of local areas and increases the community spirit within an area.

We welcome clean-up requests from all members of the community, whether you a resident, parish clerk/councillor or ward councillor.

On average, we support around 100 community litter picks every year and thousands of bags of litter are removed from our community spaces.

We provide all the equipment needed for a clean up:

  • Litter pickers
  • Gloves
  • High visibility jackets
  • Bags and bag hoops
  • Health and safety forms and guidance
  • Registration forms

We also remove all the litter once collected.

Please email volunteering@bedford.gov.uk if you would like to book a community litter pick event.

Rivercare

Rivercare is an annual community event which gives the river and Embankment area a complete clean by encouraging volunteer members of the public and representatives from local organisations to litter pick in and around the river.

The next event takes place on Saturday 28 May 2022 at 10am. The meeting point is the Butterfly Bridge on the Embankment. All equipment will be provided. Anyone can take part and the more the merrier.

You can watch the scuba divers from Bedford Scuba Diving Club and Bedford Sub Aqua Club pull out the numerous trolleys, bicycles, traffic cones and other dumped items that get discarded in the river daily.

We have also built partnerships with The John Bunyan Community Boat who kindly provide refreshments for participating volunteers.
