These chapters relate to working age adults, 18 to 65 years of age.

  • Adult excess weight is linked to poor health, and poor social outcomes. Bedford Borough tackles this national problem through local weight management programmes, exercise referrals, and learning from best practice.
  • Alcohol is one of the three biggest lifestyle risk factors for disease and death in the UK, so promoting sensible drinking and increasing the number of people receiving effective and timely support for alcohol related problems is a priority.
  • Cancer this chapter not only looks at risks to getting cancer but also looks at health impact after cancer treatment, screening, and resourcing specialist cancer professionals.
  • Cardiovascular disease are a family of diseases that are the leading cause of death in England, and is a big public health cost. This report looks at a range of effective interventions.
  • Diabetes can lead to long term complications so it is important to reduce resident's risk of Type 2 diabetes that includes education on healthy eating and an active lifestyle. 
  • Domestic abuse  includes so called ‘honour’ based violence, female genital mutilation (FGM) and forced marriage. It is clear that victims are not confined to one gender or ethnic group.
  • Drug misuse reports on a key social concern and looks at the drug user profile in Bedford Borough. 
  • Health protection (Adults) recommends a targeted approach to immunisation uptake, raised awareness to screenings plus making sure we have annual infection control training for all healthcare professionals.

  • NHS Health Checks is a national programme of health checks designed to spot early signs of stroke, kidney disease, heart disease, type 2 diabetes or dementia. This chapter reviews its roll out across Bedford Borough since 2010.
