Social housing

We allocate social housing to people with the most urgent housing need. For example, priority is given to:

  • those faced with an emergency
  • people with a severe disability or medical need
  • those who are homeless

Read how we allocate social housing as set out in Bedford Borough's allocation scheme (PDF).

Social housing and the housing register

The wait for social housing in Bedford is very long, often xx or more years. In addition to a long wait, social housing is not always the right option for everyone.

We recommend you talk to our Housing Advice team first before you apply for social housing. Call us on 01234 718058 and we can give you immediate advice. Lines are open: Monday to Thursday 8:45am to 5:15pm and Fridays 8:45am to 5pm

To apply for social housing and to be included on the housing register, you will need to complete an online application at My Home Options Choice Based Letting

Other housing options

Social housing does not exist in every area of Bedford Borough, and not all property types are available. If you want a specific property type or location, then social housing may not be a solution for you.

Instead, there are other housing associations who have properties in Bedford and let these properties via their own waiting lists:

You may want to consider home and housing options for older people.
